Ted.com Amber Case: We Are All Cyborgs

     Everyone is slowly getting addicted to technology. Being your computer or cell phone, we can't live without that source. We seem to rely mostly on computers and cell phones because that is the fastest way to connect to the media (using Twitter or Facebook). We start presenting ourselves in different ways. For example, we might appear to be someone we're not online, but in real life we're someone totally different. I believe adolescents are bound to commit this the most because they're so excited about something new. They're in a part of their life where they might get judged the most or feel sad because they think being different is a bad thing so they start presenting themselves to get other peoples' attention. This is a bad thing because it can be dangerous. There are predators out there that look for innocent young children. Adolescents tend to be more gullible and put specific information online then get caught by someone. Everyone should pay attention to any information they put online because anyone can get hold of it.



Ted.com Sheryl Sandberg: Why We Have Too Few Women Followers

     More women continuously are "dropping out" so to speak. Instead of women sitting back and letting other people take advantage of them, they should come out of their shell and speak up; express how they really feel about certain things. As women, we underestimate our own abilities. This is such a powerful and negative observation because it's true. We are so worried about attributing our success to external factors as oppose to attributing our success to ourselves like men would do, as Sheryl Sandberg mentioned in the video, that we don't acknowledge our accomplishments as much as men do. Another problem women have is making decisions too early. They seem to think too much ahead of themselves that they forget what is actually happening at the moment or what is to come in the near future and may result in regretful decision making in the future. More women need to sit at the table and be acknowledged for their accomplishments, speak up about their rights and applaud themselves for the amount of effort they put into their hard work.



Ms Magazine

     The article I read was "Future of Feminism: The Hashtag is Mightier Than the Sword". This was specifically talked about how the internet is a faster and more convenient way of receiving feedback from people. Women are able to immediately express how they feel when their rights are threatened. Normally petitions were usually done by picking up a pen and signing your name on a piece a paper, nowadays you can simply do it online using Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, etc. This is more used because results show that more people would sign petitions online rather than on paper since it's more convenient.
     The article also talks about the use of hashtags. Hashtags were mainly used as a number sign. Now people mostly use the hashtag symbol to indicate a serious matter. Which, in a way it's good because women's issues can be more noticeable. I believe that the social networking is good because it's available to more users.



Reaction to the Troopers

     I strongly appreciate what Sgt. Kevin Albanese and Trooper David Aresco of the Connecticut State Police Computer Crimes Unit do. If it weren't for people like them, the world would be filled with crimes like identity fraud or cyber bullying with no positive result such as the criminal being sentenced for some amount of years. I think it's really sickening when an older guy or any predator tries to take advantage of a younger, innocent child. I believe that every criminal should be locked up longer than what the law requires. Having these troopers from this specific crime unit really brought my attention to the internet and what I post. I learned that anyone can get access to the information you post even if you "think" it's private. As a user of social networking, I am more cautious of what I post. Witnessing millions of people on the internet posting pictures and information that can get them in trouble, makes me want to confront them about it and let them know how dangerous it is for them. People may seem to be the person you think they are behind your computer but when in reality they're really some old guy trying to pick out every little bit of information they can about you to meet up and/or do illegal things. I hope this presentation that Sgt. Kevin Albanese and Trooper David Aresco made really open up everyone's eyes to be more careful of everything that your posting!



Women in Society

According to Girls Inc. 45% of participants said that women earn less than three-fourth as much as men. Women have advanced professionally but the public does not recognize these achievements.

I believe that people are so used to hearing that women just stay indoors and housekeep while men go out to work and support their families but women are offended beause men receive all the credit since their out all day earning money. Women are also offended because they can do anything a male can do and maybe even better than them but can't show it because noone "cares".

I, as a female, take phrases like "She's a girl, she can't fix that pipe." (or something to that affect), seriously because we can do whatever a male does if we simply put our mind to it.
